How to climb in League of Legends ranked: game review, champion pool and mindset

TUREFF• •0
Climbing in ranked League of Legends is less about one magic trick and more about making slightly better decisions than your opponents over many games. The specifics of the ranked system, such as splits, rewards and promotion rules, change from season to season, so check Riot's current ranked page. The habits below apply whatever the rules are.

Narrow your champion pool

Playing many champions spreads your practice thin. Each champion has different damage windows, cooldowns and matchups.
  • Pick two or three champions for your main role and one or two for your secondary role.
  • Choose champions that share a playstyle, so lessons from one carry over to the others.
  • Avoid picking whatever looks strong this patch unless you are willing to learn it properly in normal games first.
Knowing your champion deeply means you stop thinking about buttons and start thinking about the map.

Commit to one or two roles

Mastering a role teaches you its rhythm: when to back, when to roam and which objectives matter at which time. Queue for your main role as often as you can, and learn the basics of your secondary role so you are not lost when autofilled.

Review your own games

Watching replays is the most reliable way to improve, but it has to be focused.
  1. Choose a game you lost, ideally soon after playing.
  2. Watch the first ten to fifteen minutes at normal speed.
  3. Pause whenever you died and ask what information you had. Was the enemy jungler shown on the map recently? Was your wave pushed?
  4. Note one or two recurring mistakes, not twenty.
  5. Pick one to fix in your next several games.
Common findings include dying to ganks while pushed up without vision, missing too many minions while trading, and walking alone into unwarded areas after the laning phase. Watching games where you won is also useful, because winning can hide the same errors.

Focus on what you control

You cannot control your teammates, but you are in every one of your games. Track things you directly influence:
  • Your minions per minute compared with your usual level.
  • How many deaths came from being caught without vision.
  • Whether you were at objectives when they spawned.
A good game by these measures can still be a loss, and that is fine. Over many games, steady improvement shows up in your rank.

Manage your mental state

Your decisions get worse when you are tired, frustrated or rushing.
  • Set a stopping rule, such as stopping after two losses in a row or after a set number of games.
  • Do not queue straight after a bad game. Take a few minutes away from the screen.
  • Mute early if chat is distracting you. Nothing typed mid-game helps you win.
  • Play at times when you are alert, not late at night just to finish a session.

Use normal games and practice tools

Learn a new champion in normal games or in the practice tool, not in ranked. Practise combos, last-hitting under tower and jungle clears there, so ranked games are where you apply skills you already have.

Communicate briefly

Use pings for timers, missing enemies and objectives. Short, factual messages help; arguments do not. Telling your team where the enemy jungler was last seen is worth far more than pointing out who made a mistake.

Be patient

Rank moves in streaks, up and down. Judge your progress over weeks, not a single evening. If you are improving your fundamentals, your rank will usually follow. What helped you climb the most? Share your own advice in the comments.
