League of Legends jungle basics: clear paths, ganking and tracking the enemy jungler

TUREFF• •0
Jungle is often described as the hardest role to learn in League of Legends, because it is less about a single lane and more about reading the whole map. Camp timings, experience values, pets and objectives are adjusted regularly in patches, so check the current numbers in game or on the official patch notes. The concepts below stay the same.

What the jungler does

  • Farms neutral camps to gain gold and experience.
  • Ganks lanes to help teammates get kills or force the enemy to use summoner spells.
  • Secures objectives such as dragons, the Rift Herald or its equivalent, and Baron.
  • Tracks and counters the enemy jungler, which is often the most valuable thing you can do.

Planning a clear path

Before the game starts, decide where you want to be when your first clear ends.
  1. Look at your lanes. Which ally has strong crowd control or kill pressure? Which enemy is easy to gank?
  2. Start on the side opposite to where you want to finish, so your first clear ends near the lane you want to influence.
  3. A full clear takes longer but gives more gold and experience; a shorter clear lets you gank or invade earlier. Choose based on your champion's strengths.
Practise your clear in the practice tool until you can do it without thinking, including smite timing.

Ganking well

A good gank is about timing and angle, not just showing up.
  • Gank lanes that are pushed towards your side, where the enemy is far from their tower.
  • Check what your laner can contribute: stuns, slows or damage make ganks much more likely to succeed.
  • Approach from an angle the enemy cannot see, avoiding their wards, and use the lane brush when possible.
  • Watch summoner spells. A laner without Flash is far easier to kill.
  • Do not force a gank that is unlikely to work. A failed gank costs you camps and time.
Even a gank that only forces a summoner spell or a recall can be worth it, because it gives your laner a lead in gold or tempo.

Tracking the enemy jungler

Knowing where the enemy jungler is lets your whole team play more safely and aggressively.
  • Note which side they started on. If they are seen on one side early, you can roughly guess their path.
  • Watch for missing camps, which tell you where they have been.
  • When they show in one lane, the opposite side of the map is likely safe for a short while.
  • Ping their position for your team when you know it.
If the enemy jungler is ganking top, it may be a good moment to take an objective on the other side or to gank bot yourself.

Objectives and vision

  • Track when objectives respawn and plan to be nearby beforehand, with your lanes pushed if possible.
  • Take a sweeping lens or similar vision tool when you want to clear enemy wards around objectives.
  • Ward the enemy jungle entrances when you are ahead to see their movements.

Common mistakes

  • Farming for long stretches without looking at the map.
  • Ganking a lane that is pushed under the enemy tower.
  • Fighting the enemy jungler alone when your laners cannot help.
  • Arriving late to objective fights because you were finishing a camp.

Building habits

Glance at the minimap every few seconds, keep a rough timer for objectives and think about where you will be in the next minute. Over time, these habits turn into map awareness. What jungle habit helped you most? Share your tips in the comments.
