What programming lesson did you learn the hard way?

Developers, students and hobbyists are all welcome: this is a space for code, craft and the working life of people who build software.
Places to start:
- Bugs that took far too long to find, and what finally cracked them
- Languages or tools you'd recommend to a beginner, and why
- Code review, testing and documentation habits that pay off
- Side projects: what are you building?
- Career questions, from the first job to changing fields
When asking for help, include what you tried, the error message and a minimal example. Never paste passwords, API keys or private company code. Post questions and write-ups on the board, and use the chat for some rubber-duck debugging.
